Gita Ljubicic has worked with Theo Ikummaq since 2004 to make sure that results are available and useful to the community. This sea ice glossary is an exciting outcome of 18 years working together, with support from many people and organizations. This glossary was requested by Elders in Igloolik, and she committed to helping compile the terminology they shared. It has been a very long time in the making, and she feels honoured to have been part of this process.

“This glossary is a tool that anybody can use to better know sea ice. Because our ancestors did not teach us written words of how to hunt on and use the ice, this resource will be very beneficial for youth who are not taught by Elders anymore. It can save lives…Always remember that when you are not sure about a description, ask an Elder – take the glossary home and study it, but ask an Elder for clarification.
