Taloyoak, NU March, 2001

This trip to Taloyoak, in central Nunavut near the northernmost mainland of Canada, was my first trip to the Arctic.  This trip was a preliminary community visit to discuss my Master’s research proposal with the Hamlet Council, Hunters and Trappers Association, and other local organizations, to see if the project was of interest and to receive feedback and suggestions to ensure a successful research license application.  This was quite an introduction, as I travelled alone and was met with very wintery temperatures, but also very wonderful people who took great care of me - some of whom I am still in touch with today.  Getting involved with the local high school science fair and going for a long walk on the frozen tundra, lakes, and ocean, were among the highlights.
